On a visit to Horsemen's Park in Las Vegas, we came across a competition being held in the Western Pleasure riding style. I had never experienced this type of riding before and became quite fascinated with the unusual slow and relaxed gait. As the riders and horses warmed up, they seemed to be focusing on relieving any tension.

I’ve always been intrigued by the way people focus just before competition, the quiet confidence they seek, inner dialogues they must be having, insecurities they’re likely feeling. I wanted to capture that moment in this painting, the sense of everything beyond doing well, of winning, fades in importance, fades to white.
